"If I told people what I meant, they'd just say 'No you didn't!'" he claims. Somewhere in the narrative is the history of rock and roll, from 1950 to 1971, centering on the day the music died - the day the plane carrying Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper crashed. McLean does reveal that the recording starts off in mono and slowly separates to stereo as the events in the song become more modern.

I, being primarily a solo keyboardist/vocalist, find this arrangement is excellent! The clarity of the passages, from the intro to the end, make it easy to "cover all the bases" and give a performance that is expressive, vibrant, and accurate.
